The Crazy Lady Speaking
I was the one of the IRT tunnel
rummaging in my patent-leather pocketbook
while deep blue lights flew by the subway window.
You hated my stockings, rolled to the knee.
I was the one in the cafeteria at 2 a.m.
my eyes were flat pennies and stared at your plate.
To you it was worse than India.
You are afraid I might urinate on the floor.
I was the one in the faded sweater
missing three buttons, my hair dyed pumpkin,
at the baseball game in August,
yelling behind you, getting spit in your hair.
I have all of the rings and necklaces
I need. My apartment smells of cat.
I want to invite you to it. What I approach
grows like a jungle. I am the one who loves you.
You should have seen me dance in La Sylphide,
in Lac des Cygnes. You should have seen
my Cleopatra, my Camille, my Juliet.
From each of their graves I rise, daughter. Embrace me.

ho bisogno. Il mio appartamento puzza di gatto.
Ti ci voglio invitare. Tutto quello che avvicino
cresce come una giungla. Io sono quella che ti ama.
Avresti dovuto vedermi danzare ne La Sylphide,
nel Lac des Cygnes. Avresti dovuto vedere
la mia Cleopatra, la mia Camilla, la mia Giulietta.
Da ognuna delle loro tombe risorgo, figlia. Abbracciami.
