Siamo distesi nudi nella calda
aria d’aprile sotto le sequoie
rosse, sul dirupo assolato.
Quando ti pieghi su di me,
sui tuoi fianchi vedo piccoli
segni rossi come morsi,
dove le pigne delle sequoie
hanno segnato la tua carne.
Sono gli stessi segni che si trovano
sulla lignite del dirupo sopra
di noi. Sequoia Langsdorfii
prima del ghiaccio, e dopo
sempervirens. Minima differenza
se non fosse per tutti quegli anni.
Qui, nel mortifero e dolciastro
fetore dei fiori di primavera,
relitti galleggianti insieme,
lavati, freddi e nudi, sotto
quest’albero per un istante
noi siamo sfuggiti all’amarezza
d’amore, dell’amore perduto
e dell’amore tradito. Ciò che potrebbe
essere stato e ciò che potrà essere
svaniscono insieme a ciò che è,
lasciando solo questi ideogrammi
impressi sugli idrocarburi
eterni della carne e della pietra.

Naked in the warm April air,
We lie under the redwoods,
In the sunny lee of a cliff.
As you kneel above me I see
Tiny red marks on your flanks
Like bites, where the redwood cones
Have pressed into your flesh.
You can find just the same marks
In the lignite in the cliff
Over our heads. Sequoia
Langsdorfii before the ice,
And sempervirens afterwards,
There is little difference,
Except for all those years.
Here in the sweet, moribund
Fetor of spring flowers, washed,
Flotsam and jetsam together,
Cool and naked together,
Under this tree for a moment,
We have escaped the bitterness
Of love, and love lost, and love
Betrayed. And what might have been,
And what might be, fall equally
Away whit what is, and leave
Only these ideograms
Printed on the immortal
Hydrocarbons of flesh and stone.
