She was dazzling beyond meaning
and all life seemed a greening
of pastures, caught in each tense,
love so immense it seemed absurd
that each grain of feeling became a word
which trembled through his being and shook
until all the words became a book.
Even she was stunned in finding
perfect words in perfect binding.
Lecturers read it, surprised, and next
the moving book became a set text.
Study conducted, the text was dissected,
scrutinised, deconstructed, resurrected.
The text was a discourse at which daily
gravely stern scholars would look.
But who among them could read the book?

Se ne stava oltremodo abbagliante,
tutta la vita un verdeggiante
pascolo, comunque la guardassi,
sembrava assurdo un amore così immenso
che divenne ogni briciola di sentimento
una parola tutta tremante,
finché divennero un libro tutte quante.
E ancora era stordita nel cercare
parole perfette in un perfetto accordare.
Sorpresi lo lessero i lettori, e presto
il libro mosso divenne solo un testo.
Condotti studi, fu il testo sezionato,
esaminato, decostruito, resuscitato.
Il testo era un discorso a cui ogni giorno
scolari austeri avrebbero guardato.
Ma chi di loro lo avrebbe interpretato?
